Default What can I use to clean brake dust off of my rims?

I haven't cleaned my rims in a while, and they have a fair amount of brake dust. Given their condition, just wiping the rims won't clean them. What can I use to make my rims shiny again?

Default Simple Green and my dog

Actually, sitting here at work, I don't. But I do remember studying the thing pretty carefully b/c I recall using one of the many "wheel" cleaners I have in the garage which gave all kinds of warnings about proper disposal, ingestion etc. and how I was careful to keep the dog from drinking the running water as she is likely to do. Simple green does not have nearly the kind of disclosures, it even says, I think, that it is non-toxic. And you know, it does a pretty good job on just about anything I have used it on.<p>00 Avant,1.8TQMS,Conv.,Bose,Hib. Red/Onyx,APR,Weathertech Mats f/r/t. I've read that Simple Green attacks the adhesive on the wheel weights ...

Default Auto detailer told me an interesting fact today

If A4 owners don't clean our brake dust off every so often, the residue of brake fluid (which he says is the heart and soul of brake dust) on our nice alloy wheels will damage the wheels if left on them for too long.

The owner's manual says that brake dust is corrosive, but I don't think it's because of brake fluid. The dust is simply the pad material. That's why a number of owners have changed to Mintex pads.

I think the owner's manual even recommends coating the wheels with vaseline to protect against corrosion. Can you imagine the mess that would make?
