what causes clunking in the steering column....is it the steering wheel bolt or something else

Worn control arms, worn tie rod ends, loose subframe bolts, loose steering rack, delaminated brake pads, or pads shifting in the carriers.
There's probably a dozen other sources of unusual clunks in and around the front suspension. Search the archives for some of the more common problems, check the items one by one and narrow the problem down.
