What to change w/ Timing Belt
#4
While you're already in there, it's best to change everything.
With the 2.8, the water pump is a must, with the 1.8T it's optional. Like I said though...the incremental cost of the water pump sort of justifies it's replacement (~$60). Replace the tensioner/rollers and the main drive belt while you're in there as well. You can get everything you need for a good price at www.ECSTuning.com.

Here is my list:
1 timing belt
1 timing belt tensioner pulley
1 timing belt idler pulley
1 water pump (German, not Italian) and gasket
1 thermostat and O-ring gasket
1 serpentine belt
1 serpentine belt tensioner pulley; possibly the "serpentine accessory belt update kit" from Audi, if applicable. The kit eliminates the 2nd idler pulley. I'm not yet sure if this applies to my 2.8.
1 O-ring seal for the engine block coolant drain bolt
I'm also thinking of replacing the viscous-clutch-driven fan with an electric one...
1 APR snub mount
I'll also replace camshaft and crankshaft oil seals, if they are leaking.
I'll also flush and replace the coolant.

The water pump is easier to get to once the belt is off.
All you need to do is remove one more pulley and you can change the front half instead of the whole pump. The front half contains the only moving part (impeller).
The water pump with the front half (impeller) removed. You can see the T-stat peeking through.

The issue is the 2.8 waterpump is driven off the timing belt.
The last thing you want is that pump siezing and the timing belt skipping or breaking.
On the 1.8T, isn't not driven off the timing belt, so even if it siezes, it's no big deal, just replace it.
If *I* was in there replacing the timing belt, the pump is easy enough to access since you've already taking everything off the front of the car. I would just replace the pump while i was in there, so I wouldn't have to worry about it.
