There is a cam chain AND a timing belt. Both have tensioners. Two separate things. That's all that we can tell you. You have to now figure out the nomenclature that they used....did they mean timing belt when they said "cam belt?" Or did they mistakenly refer to the cam chain as the "cam belt?" As Kris H. said, look on the repair order and find part numbers, that's the only sure bet. Good luck

Do you still have the repair order form when it was changed? If so, it should have part numbers on it that we can use to try to figure out what was changed..

a long print list of what was done at what mileage. i do not have a work order...just a sheet. i'll grab the sheet at lunch time and see if there are any numbers (though i'm sure there isn't).

us have the cam chain tensioner replaced because it rattles, which seems to be mostly on the '01s.

If you don't have part numbers, then I guess your next stop (if you're really worried about it) is to inspect it. If you're pre-99, then you'll be able to tell very easily whether it's been changed or not. There are two tensioner styles.

If you're pre-99 and have the new tensioner (on the right), then it's a safe bet that it's been changed. If you're 2000 or 2001, then you should have the new tensioner anyways, so the best you can do is try to inspect the belt. BTW, you'll need to remove the upper timing belt cover in order to see the belt. I'm not sure if you'll be able to see the tensioner though, it's a bit more difficult to get to. Good luck

internally. VAG has been doing this for years, back to at least the 16v VWs, and probably even before that if there were any DOHC engines before the 16v 1.8.
