Default There is no difference, so no one ever calls them 1997.5.

We differentaite between 98.0 adn 98.5 because there was some taillight and stereo changes, and then again in 99 vs 99.5 since there was a pretty significant redesign in 99.5. Also we refer to 01 vw 01.5 because the Quattro Sport option came with 17 rims in 01.5.

Default although, there can be several differences between the 97s...

i'm not sure if it's due to a half-year split or just random, but:

some have the "football" logo while others do not
some have the orange in the taillights while others have the "98" rear.
some have the 3357 triple square tranny drain plug while others have the 17mm allen drain plug
some have the concert radio while others have the delta radio

not sure of the reasons why, just comparing to a friend's 97.

Default Mine is a July '97 build and

When a bunch of us were changing the timing belt there were a couple of things that were different from another guy's '97'. My tailights are still amber, but I am lucky enough to not have the footballs on the fenders. Also I still have the carbon fiber driveshaft.

Another reason has to do with safety recall for ignition wire meltdowns stopping at 97. Audi continued with same setup into 98 year but doesn't have to fix those. "Just bidness," about covers it. (dayumm bean counters, yatta, gag, bleh) Yep, I bought one with the melted ignition wiring and fixed it. Now trying to sort out no electricity to cylinder 2 and finding out the plugs aren't easily found. Done ranting, sorta... Enjoy.

VAG is big on rolling changes. If they run out of a part they just grab something else.
