Default What is the difference between leaded and unleaded gas??

Does it have to do with the EFI? Can carburated engines run leaded?

Thanks - Any info would be great!

Default One has lead in it.... =P

leaded gas went away in the late sixties. Some carburated cars can run leaded gas, but only if they were designed to. You cant just put leaded gas into any carburated car.

Newer cars don't use leaded gas because it screws up O2 sensors & Cats.

Default The addition of tetra-ethyl-lead...

An anti-knock additive that boosts effective octane rating and allows cheaper to manufacture base fuels to be sold as higher octane.

Saves money for the refiners, but your 94 octane leaded stuff leaves that lead coming out the tailpipe. Which isn't the real problem, the real problem is that the lead would get into the catalytic converters and "poison" them so then did not do their job of breaking down the Ozone producing combusion byproducts.

Any engine can run leaded gas really. But your cats (which all cars have) will gradually cease to function.

Don't use leaded gas if you have a convertor. Lead was used to help lubricate the top end.

Default as the guy said-lead and cats don't mix. my benz requires..

lead but I've been running it for years without it. Primary problem is lack of lubricant for the valves but It doesn't seriously shorten the lifespan. The other problem is lack of octane but my motor is low enough compression to survive with the timing backed down. In a modern motor you would gain nothing from the lead at all, even if you took off the cat. Besides the reason they got away from it is because it will KILL you over time.
