What do I need to do to get my rear speakers to work?
I installed a new HU and connected everything with a wireing harness but I don't know how to hook up the rear speakers. Can I splice the existing rear speakers wires to the connection with the front (no front to rear fade possible) or should I run new wire to the existing rear speakers. As I understand, the rear speakers have their own amp. My budget is almost dry so buying a new amp and speakers at this time is not a option. Thanks for you help.

yup...
the wire carrying a signal to the rear amp are small gauge because it's low level. you wouldn't want to run high level signals on this wire anyway. so run new wiring to the rear speakers and bypass the existing wiring and rear/amp.

does your head unit have front and rear speaker outs?
if so, use these. Sounds like the front ones are already hooked up with your harness. The harness does not connect to the rear speakers because of the unique way the audi engineers decided to hook up the rears. The amp in your stereo should definitely run the rears.
You CAN use the amp that's already there for the rear speakers, but you'd have to send a pre-amp signal (not speaker signal) meaning you'd have to cut up a set of RCA cables and splice into the amp at the left rear speaker.
Just hook up new speaker wire to the rear speaker leads in the new head unit and run these to the rear speakers. This way the rears get speaker level signals, not pre-amp signals.

If it's like a '97 non-bose...
Then the rear speakers wired thru the harness is fine. What you need to do is find the lead for the "remote power" for the factory amp that's on the driver side rear speaker. Then wire the "remote lead" from your h.u. to that. For mine it was in the real little harness that had six pins that were in a stacked "V" pattern, but I can't remember which pin. I think somewhere there was a factory sticker that showed what each lead did, on the stock h.u. maybe.
