What does a limited slip differential do, and is it worth any kind of extra money to get?

Limited Slip Differentials (LSD) helps send power to another tire on the same axle when one tire is slipping. So if you were driving a rear wheel drive car and your right rear tire was parked on ice and the other was on dry pavement, you would most likely sit and spin that one tire that's on ice. If you had LSD, the differential would slip a little (hence the name "limited slip") then start sending some of the power through to the other tire on dry pavement to get you going.
There's several types of LSDs: Clutch type, Torsen, etc.
If you're planning to accelerate hard, then yes... LSD is worthwhile. It'll help send power to both drive wheels.
