Hello,

I am a real rookie in the world of automobiles but could someone describe what pinging sounds like? Is it just a noise or can you feel it as well? I think my car has it. Is it the same as detonation?

Oops, I forgot to mention, the noise only happens for a second when you punch the gas pedal.

BB's bouncing off sheet metal, kind of a mix of a "tink" and a "tap" (how are those for unscientific terms!). I'm working out a pinging problem myself with a chip for my 2000 1.8T. HTH.<p><a href="http://registry.audiworld.com/audi/registry/details.asp?car=2361">

that's far worse than some minor pinging. If your car makes the noise you describe I'd suggest you to to have it looked at...it's hell on bearings and con-rods.

This happened only once since my apr ecu upgrade. The oil temps were low (170-190F) and from what I recall the coolant temp was not yet up to par.

Basically It occured a few minutes after pulling out of my driveway (car was not "fully warmed" and I got on it a little because i was running late.....I know, I know).

I think Im gonna get it checked out..just to be safe. Any other thoughts on this?

Do you feel a loss of power or a hesitation when this happens? If you say it only happened once it's not ping..when the car pings it will do it whenever you get on it really hard. Or when you drive semi agressively in hot weather as the intake charge temps go up a tad, which makes pinging even more of a problem.

Roll all 4 windows down and take off from a stop...wind it all the way out to about 5~6 grand. You'll hear a ticking noise that comes and then goes, that would be ping...you'll usually here it once for each of the 3 lower gears. It goes away cause the computer makes timing adjustments until it has forced the knock sensor output below the detection threshold. It's a feedback system...it works nicely.

It sounds exactly like a low volume "ping" sound...sometimes twice in one gear. Arrggh to the you the truth I would get this low volume ping before I chipped the car-but not the before mentioned "slap" (serious detonation) sound. **** now Im concerned. Thanks for the info James..I'll see what more I can scrape from the archives.
