What does this sound like to you?

Over the last couple of months my '98 1.8tqms has developed a strange noise. It occurs only over a small rpm range: from about 3100 to 3300. Within this rpm range, the pitch will vary with engine speed; the sound cuts off abruptly both above & below this rpm range. If I hold the throttle steady within this rpm range, the noise is continous. It's sort of a high pitched raspy sound. It seems to go away after about 30 minutes of driving. I haven't noticed any associated performance problems. Anybody experienced this before, or have any idea what it could be? Thanks,
-Roger

I've had a couple of noises in this rpm range but neither sound exactly the same. One is the moan/groan that is described in detail in a FAQ. The other is what I would call a 'metallic shrill' type sound as rpms drop (between shifts) through 3500 rpm. This is very intermittent, goes away in real cold weather, and doesn't seem to occur when the engine is pulling.
