Default What does a valve cover leak look like? (more inside)

I took off the black plastic engine cover this evening on my 1.8t, and I looked to the passenger side of the block, as someone on the forum suggested. I wasn't sure where to look, or what to look for, but i did see some oil residue along the length of this piece of metal that's on the passenger side...am i looking in the right place? maybe there's nothing wrong...thanks for any info on what i'm supposed to be looking for!
98.5 1.8tqm =)

Default I see some oil there too...

I see a slight amount of oil accumulation along that shiny metal channel that you refer to. At my 1st service I mentioned it and the tech. said it looked like residue from something that they coat the engine or whatever with. (I said OK???). Now at 18 months a bit more oil there - I'm going to bring it up again.
Tom
1.8TQMS Silver

Default That part is the heat shield...

and it seems to be the place that oil collects. I've also seen it collect behind that on top of the bell housing. I cleaned mine off, retorqued the cover bolts, and if it dirties back up again I figure the dealer gets to put another gasket in next service. I'd do it myself (very easy), but anytime I want to do the work they make me buy the parts. If they do the work it's free.
