Default What exactly is the function of a bypass (or blowoff) valve?

I only recently learned what the wastegate does, since my turbo suffered the infamous "broken wastegate rod" issue.
I learned that the wastegate bleeds off extra boost on the exhaust side, so that the exhaust gases don't even spin the turbine.

So what does a BPV do? Does it bleed off boost on the cold air side? If the turbo has a wastegate, why is a BPV even needed?

Just curious...

You are correct. It releases the pressure on the cold side when the throttle plate closes.

Default Further... if the BPV didn't release that pressure it would 'slow/stall' the turbo making

lag between shifts even worse. Assuming you take your foot off the gas when you shift

Default FYI also, wastegate operates at WOT(foot on pedal) in order to hold a certain boost level

and BPV operates when in vacuum(released accelerator)
