Default what is the first sign of wheel bearing issues?

just idling around i heard a squeek in the parking garage this morning...steering wheel position seemed to affect it a little...turning left made it louder, straight made it go away..but came back, turning right made it go away.

Very light squeek/squeal, would never had heard it without being in a garage for the echo...

That is probably a brake pad..wheel bearings tend to groan and eventually howl.

What's the best way to find out if a wheel bearing is bad anyways?

Default Trust me, you will know. It is right up there with the worst sounds a car can make..

it is a constant howling/grinding noise that resonates through the car.

The noise will go away in corners, the direction indicates the side of the car with the bad bearing..left bend, left side, right bend, right side..

Front to rear is easy to figure out. A word of (semi) wisdom: tires with flat spots in the belts can sound like a bad wheel bearing, if you suspect that you have a bad bearing, try to move the tires on the side of the car that you suspect has the bad bearing from front to rear. IF the sound moves with the tires, you have a bad tire. If it stays, it is (most likely) the bearing.

Default If the wheel bearings are going out, I would think...

that the hub would get hot after an extended drive. If the bearings are going, it may be VERY hot.

They get hot anyway, mainly from the brake rotors.

Default You'll hear a low-pitched hum when turning either left or right...

If you weave back and forth at speed, it will come and go depending on which way you're turning. You may also be able to move the actual wheel a bit by hand when the car is jacked up, indicating bearing slop...I think.
