How am I supposed to get the button off!!!! I really wasn't using that much force, just "gentle tugging". TIA

it doesn't come off, the mirror attaches to it, and slides off independently.
If you're doing some modification to your mirror and want the button off, about the only way to do it is to order a new windshield and have the shop NOT glue the button on there.
Occasionally, the glue will give before the windshield, but typically no.
