There is the standard K03, the "sport" K03 and the updated K03.
The standard K03 appeared from 97 until 2001 (or thereabouts)
The "sport" K03 was sold by a few aftermarket tuners, and was a standard K03 with a clipped compressor wheel to give it more boost. Problem was, a K04 was almost the same price, and clipping a wheel isn't usually recommended.
Then there was the updated K03. This is actually a K03/K04. It has a K04 compressor section with a K03 turbine section. This allowed better efficiency at higher boost pressures, while still maintaining the same spool-up characteristics of a K03. I think all 170hp cars have this turbo.

your turbo has a K03 exhaust and compressor wheel with an upgrade exhaust housing that is same as the K04. The late model VW transverse mount motors have a K03 sport type turbo.

it has NO K04 parts whatsoever. It seems that KKK just slightly increased the size of the compressor in order to flow a little more air for the 180 engines. The common misconception is that the 180 K03 has a K04 turbine. This isn't the case, although a k03 "sport" may indeed have this, I dunno.....not very familiar with it.

but I have seen (3) 2001 turbos and they have the same part number as my 2000 which ends in 0029. the 0029's have the same rear K04 housing which is less prone to crack than the older K03 housings.

However, not all K04s are the same, K04 just refers to the family-type, but the A/R or trim of the wheel could be different from the K04-15 that aftermarket tuners use.
