What kind of oil do you guys use for your 1.8T engines?

VW 502 is based on the Generic ACEA A3-spec, adding mpg and cold-cranking stipulations. That being said, dino HDEO 15w-40s meet A3 as well as blends like DuraBlend 10w-40 as well as WalMart's SUPERTECH Synth. To meet A3, an oil has to be decent and thick, Syntec 5w-40 is that. For $5.50+ a quart, it's hardly cutting-edge. Like I said, if it was free, I'd use it in an old V6 just for economy's sake. I would not even put it in a new car at all.
fwiw, MaxLife Synth is A3, recommended for VW 502 and might be considered well worth the $4.50-$5 asking price. I'd rather even use SynPower 5w-40 over Syntec ...and I'm a Castrol fan.

You seem quite well versed in oil technology.. do you do this for a living?
I just figured Audi would have done it's homework and request a good oil for an OEM choice.

Mg(OH)2 (heat) ? MgO(s) + H2O(l)
Audi just sets the test criteria and after the oil meets it, game over... oxidization and wear and deposits are a normal by-product after the oil is run too long (longer than the test sequence). Mg additives are the older, available, techology at the time this formulation was made to meet the spec, 1998. Now you see much newer additives, including Antimony Sb and Borate esters which oils like Mobil Clean and Motorcraft offer. There just is no comparison to Mobil 1 in this case and price/performance should be taken into account with the 1.8t. Other engines, I say to use ~whatever~ basic oil that will do the job.
PS my college study was in History and Sociology of Science. It's a good basis for learning new (to me) subjects, like Tribology....which has evolved from greasing chariot wheels to -200f lubricants for space applications. Tribology is just interesting in general. When the 10k intervals came out for my 2002 B6, I told the guys over there I would go and learn more about the subject. Euro oil for German owners are a higher standard and it attracts both people who need to and want to learn more.

Next time: 4 liter Pennzoil Platium 5w-30 plus Delvac 15w-40.
Why? Just because I have the oil already. I usually run M1 0w-40 tho.

Ow-30 german Castrol (GC) maintains the same viscosity it starts at 12cSt whereas many 40 weights shear down below the GC's viscosity level...nothing wears at an even lower rate than GC...
On top of that the GC is porsche approved...sounds like the best choice to me...
