I bought mine when Vag-Com first came out. I have the old style cable, which works for me,,but the software for that version stops at the 311.2 version. There has been newer releases of the software sinse that version of course that do not work with my cable. I use the Windows based version,,easy to navigate with the laptop.
So,,in answer to your question,,you can get either version,,it is up to you. Try to get a newer style cable so that you can take advantage of newer software releases. Unless,,you get a sweet deal on a used one and don't mind an older style setup. Either way,,it all does what you want it to do "basically".
