What is the little L-shaped hose, that runs under the coolant expansion tank?

Default Actually I think it is... because it was flatter when the
car was on, and then expanded back to being round when the car was shut off.

Default then cant u just get some vac hose and couple zip ties and fix that... im gonna go look at my car
now but i think thats all you need...

mine died too, this replacement part has fiber strands sandwitched between the rubber.

Default We call it the "L" hose at the dealer, yes there is an upgraded part as quattrorally mentioned
Its not expensive either, just visit your local VW or Audi dealer and tell them you need a 1.8T "L" hose and clamps. Its extremely easy to replace.
