Some of you may have read my post about my car over heating a couple days ago. I had my car towed down to the shop and they just called me this morning with the bad news. It turns out that my thermastat stuck and now I have some serious piston knock in either my number 2 or 3 cylinders or possibly even both. They are telling me that I should replace my engine and I am waiting for them to call me back with a quote.

My question is what options do I have? Any idea how much a new stock engine is going to cost me? Would it be worth while to have them just try and rebuild my current engine with better interals or would that cost more then just replacing it? I was planning on building up the engine in the future anyways so would I be better to just buy an already built 1.9L or 2.0l race engine? How much more would a good built engine cost me?

Also, my friend has a 1.8T engine from his A4 he wrecked a little while ago but it already has like 40-50k mile on it I think. He is asking $1,500.00 for it. I was considering just buying it and then just selling my car too.

Please let me know what you think my best option is.

A new 1.8T is around 3.5 - 4K plus labor

hey how do you have piston knock(piston slap) from thermostat stuck open? do you live in cold area or hot area?...how long was your thermostat bad for,,,,are you still under full warrenty?
