I've been caring for my wife's brilliant black A6 wagon since it was new, and believe me, an A4 is no work at all compared to that wagon. I get excellent results with Omega Glaze used twice a year (spring and fall), followed by Blitz Wax. The glaze eliminates virtually all of those superficial scratches and swirl marks that show up so easily on a black car. And Blitz wax not only looks good, it's very easy to use and lasts quite a long time. 3M IHG is very good too, but no better than Omega Glaze, IMO. Whatever product you use, glazing is definitely worth the effort. I wax more than twice a year, but with a wife and two active kids I frankly don't have time to glaze more than that. I always smile when I read posts from guys who say they spent 6 hours or more in a single day washing, claying, glazing and waxing. I'd never want to spend that much time on my car anyway, but with kids it's plain impossible.
As for washing: I use Meguire's car wash, but anything that's gentle and won't strip the wax should be fine (unless you're starting from square one, in which case a some Dawn dish detergent in water will take off the old wax and give you clean surface to glaze). Check out the articles at carcareonline.com for more tips.
