What is the purpose of the drivers side windsheild wiper blade having that extra piece on it??

The piece that is on the wiper arm...
Here's a possibility... it uses the wind pressure as a downward force to keep the wiper blade in contact with the windshield when used at highway speeds. That's about the best explaination I can think of.

It keeps the blade stable at vertical when going very very fast (120+MPH)
