Default This is what running lean will get you...

A final pic of the carnage from cylinder #1 rod breaking:

Then, you get to do stuff like this:

This is what I did on Saturday. Two guys and a little less than 8 hours with carefull documentation of everything. Hopefully it goes back together like it should.

We have a few parts to order today and we sending the torque converter to Level 10 to have Sam and the boys beef her up some.

Default Running lean shoudl not cause a rod to break, unless the piston melts first...

is that what happened? or was it something else?

Default I'm not completely sure, but I think my "friends" at PES Tuning had a little something to do with

it. I had a PES T-28 kit installed for a few weeks and it was running lean. I couldn't get the guys at PES to do anything other than tell me that they don't believe me. It's not worth talking about, I just will NEVER deal with them again.

In the end, I believe the motor was running lean enough to over heat the cylinder walls and seize the piston in cylinder #1 first. That then caused the rod to let go. This all happend on the Interstate with the cruise set at 74 mph.

Default Like I said below, I can't be sure. I'm going to pull the motor apart to see what's inside.

I'm hoping the head is still good so I can sell it.

Default Was it kocking a lot before it let fly? I've seen lean running break pistons...

but not a con rod, with an unscathed piston. Either poor oiling, or too much boost is my bet.

Default I never heard any knocking, ever. That's the strange part. My logs were showing massive timing

pull, but never any knocking.

Default The worst thing is that none of you would have ever thought anything was wrong by

driving or riding in the car. I only knew something was wrong from running VAG logs for CAPS times and general checking. Several guys I work with all had ride in the car and thought everything sounded perfect.
