Default What is that sceeching sound coming out of the engine compartement on a cold start?

You know the one that seems to change tone with RPM rising? Lot's of old cars have it, and it goes away after about 2 minutes of driving.

No, I did not ran over any cats on my way home, so may be its thouse birds that are nesting inside my engine compartement

Default Fan/steering belt needs tightening/replacing is my guess

Get out of the car, lift the hood, and find the source for yourself.

Default Belts?

Often a belt is loose and slids on a pulley instead of turning with it. This makes a horrible sound. Tighten the belt if it's loose. Sometimes it is tight. In this case holding a soapstone against the belt when it's turning can help. This is a Vermont back-woods mechanic trick. Be careful not to lose any fingers.

Default Be careful...

Often when you tighen loose belts that are old they tend to break soon after. If the the belts are old or worn might be best to replace!

Default Is Fan/Steering belt same thing as a timing belt? I have a 2.8 12V

I thought that we only had one belt driving everything.

Timing belt is different. Serpentine belt does the rest.
