Default What should the temp. and oil gauge be reading?

The car is a 1998 A4 30V. I just sold it to a friend and he wanted to know why it was so low. It seems that in the colder weather the guages are much lower than they should be.

Default Sounds like the thermostat is gone

Since the radiator cools the engine coolant, and the engine coolant cools the engine oil, a defective thermostat (stuck open) would cool the fluids too much in cold weather. That's what I'd check first.
