What are the signs of a failing thermostat or water pump?
Could somebody comment on the signs of a failing thermostat and a water pump? Is fluctuation of a coolant temperature after the car is warm something to be concerned about? I have noticed that my coolant temp. started fluctuating after the car warms up. It used to be in the middle after the engine warmed up and no matter how I drove it would be in the middle. Now it is going down to almost "cold" position during long stretches of freeway driving. Is this a problem?
Thanks.
Thanks.

well if the coolant temp sensor is not failing, it sounds like the thermostat is stuck open so it's
continously cycling coolant, so it never reaches operating temps. Not ideal as you won't have a really functioning heater, but it isn't horrible. Now if the thermostat stuck shut, then you'd have problems of a more critical nature. I'd still get it fixed tho.

my coolant temp doesn't budge once it warms up. stays right in the middle. could also be a bad
sender for the gauge.
my oil temp sender went bad and my oil temp was wandering all over the place.

Does it come up to temp when it idles? But drop when you hit the freeway particularly
...when it's cooler outside. sounds like thermostat to me. Mine did that no problem during the summer but became more evident in the fall.

A cold chill runs down your spine as you break into a nervous sweat......
images of loved ones and experiences in your life flash through your mind as you contemplate your fate.
Either that or you'll hear some clicking or something.
