I know it's a little early to be thinking winter but being as the summer is pretty much over I thought I'd start searching for a new set of winter tires. I am looking for 16" tires and would like to go with something a little narrower than stock. I'm thinking 195/60 R16 or maybe even 185/60 R16. I see more packed snow/icy roads than deep snowy roads, will a narrower tire help on ice? Is a 185 width neccary or just overkill?
Also, I run 235/45 R17's in the summer, will I have any alignment issues if I go to a super narrow tire for winter?
Thanks for any input!

to grip the slippery surface. With that said I doubt you will notice that big of a difference one way or another. Just get a good set of snows in the standard size.

Everytime they race on snow or ice it is with skinny studded tires not wide studded tires. There are lots of explainations on the internet as to why skinny and not wide in the snow or ice.

in Chicago. I have never had any problems with them as long as I have used them. I do not use them the whole winter. Since I have a floor jack, air gun, and the tires are on a set of rims, I just swap them onto the car (15 mins total time) if substantial snow is predicted.
