It holds power to the ignition lead after you remove the key to cool the oil in the turbo.

Default Turbo Timer allows turbo to cool

When you shut the engine off, the oil and water pumps turn off therefore allowing no fluids to flow over the bearings/shaft assembly. A turbo timer controls the amount of time when the engine shuts off allowing for ample time (either user set or auto adustable) to cool and allow the turbo to spin down.

Not needed - just a convenience feature. Otherwise you've gotta sit in your car and wait.

Default what happens if you dont? ... does it shorten just the life of the turbo?

is this a major problem not allowing your turbo to cool down?

After spirited driving either sit in the car for 2 or 3 minutes or get a timer

Default YES!!!!

The turbo can get very very very hot. The idle down allows it to cool. If it doesn't, it will fry the motor oil in and around the turbo. Eventually, the lines will get constricted with "coked" oil, starving the turbo of much need lubrication.
