Default What type of puller do you guys use on the cam sprockets for the 2.8 during a tb job?

Just about embark on my first B5 timing belt job and am curious what type of gear puller you guys use. When I did my 90's timing belt, I used a two jaw gear puller from Sears (<a href="http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00946903000P" target="_blank">Link</a>) and thought that was a pain in the ***.

What do you guys use?

Default I use this:

But I'm not sure I would recommend it for everyone. I back the bolt out about a mm, then I tap the head of the bolt with the hammer. The sprocket just pops off. If you miss and hit the sprocket, you will break it.

Default I had the benifit of having a BSA gearhead next door so I used the same tool for oil service on

those bikes. That BSA tool looks just like the vag gear puller in Bentley.

Worked like a charm but I've heard Kris and others say you can use a 6" Sears gear puller.

Default TJ: The BSA gearhead wanted to know if anyone gently heats them and then they just

pop off. I forgot to ask you all that couple of months ago. So?

Plus I've almost got him convinced to pick up a B5 quattro. I consider that a major victory for the car =)

Default I use a 2 arm puller. It's not that bad.

I'm not sure It's worth the risk of warpage.

Default Yeah, I was able to get the job done, but the pointy tip on the Sears one makes it harder...

I wonder if a 3 jaw would help stabilize it more.

Default Yeah, that's true. You could always grind the tip off....

Mine just digs in slightly.

Concur. Not to mention that heat is never needed. They pop right off.

Default That pic speaks volumes about the proper way to pull the sprocket.

If you try to pull from the outer edge where the teeth are, you will probably break the sprocket.
