I'm having trouble with my car and I suspect it was overfilled when I had my last oil change. It cuts off intremittenly and won't start again for a while. We believe it's the ECU, but I'm just trouble shooting.

Can cause excessive blow-by past the pistons which will put crankcase vapors into the exhaust stream.
This will cause the Bentley mentioned misfires.
It could also cause your catalytic convertor to work overtime to burn off the oil vapor, overheat and fail.
This will then be detected by the oxygen sensors which will cause the check engine light to come on.

the crank will whip the oil into a foamy mess that will not flow to the rest of your engine and cause pretty catastrophic damage.
I have no idea how much extra oil is needed to get to this stage though.
