Default what would cause a single cylinder to misfire?

i posted a few days ago about my 99 1.8t jerking and surging at WOT. i finally found out that the problem was due to misfiring but still cant find the cause. vagcom says that cylinder 1 is misfiring so the first thing i did was switch coilpacks with cylinder 2, still doesnt work. i then tested the output stage with the instructions posted in the tech section, nothing wrong with that. next i tested the resistance of the fuel injector and compared it to that of the cyl. 2 injector, same values...im running out of ideas...can anyone think of anything else which would cause this?

Pretty good. Otherwise, I'd say your IAT is bad.

Default the strange thing is that it only happens under heavy loads...

either at WOT or going uphill with 4 people in the car. everything runs fine normally. could a spark plug exibit that behavior? also, how could the IAT only cause 1 cylinder to misfire and not cause any other apparent problems?

If the gap is too big, yes.
