yikes!

i used foam double sided (picture frame) tape to separate my mud flaps from the paint. no problems there.

do you think its possible that the combination of gas and adhesive caused the clear coat to fail?

Maybe. It didnt peel off a large area just a 1/2" strip where the tape was,
