Today I put in 14.961 gallons, without topping off. I think I cut it a little too close :>)

Default 16.2 on a FWD

I have a small suspicion that the pump computer may have been rigged to overcount the gas by 2-3%.

Default My conspiracy theory ...

I think that there is a conspiracy with the new pumps that have the automated shut off (i.e. no manual, lever-type shut off).

Here's my theory. I bet that the gas counter is calibrated to count the amount of gas going into the hose, not the amount of gas LEAVING the hose. so when the vapor-recovery mechanism triggers the gas pump to stop, and since you can't empty the hose by manually shutting off the pump, I bet you actually pay for the gas that is still left in the hose at that point. Then the gas is drained back into the pump, and the station double-charges for that gas when it sells it to the next person.

:>)

Default But isn't there gas in the hose already when you start filling your tank...

...that presumably the person before you paid for, which may or, more likely, may not be the 93 octane good stuff you want to put in your car.

Default Good point..

Go for the stations with 3 separate hoses.. Then you aren't paying for the next guy to get your premium

Default Or you could be sure to wait in line behind someone who'd filled up w/premium...

...and swipe a little of his.

Default An old trick from the 50s and 60s was to turn off the pump and then open the nozzle

The fuel remaining in the hose would then be free. Do this at a few closed stations and you got some extra fuel. This is back in the days when kids did not have the opportunity to make money like now.
