In a symphony w/ bose system, everything runs off the bose amp, which is designed for an odd ohm load. YOu can't re-use the bose amp w/o an adapting device, and it's just not worth spending the $100-150 for that device when you can buy an amp for that cost.
If you have non-bose symphony it uses an amp in the symphony HU as well as an amp on the rear left speaker. I'm not sure if the amp on the rear left speaker just powers the rear speakers or what. If it powers the rears, than the HU may only have a 2 channel internal amp, so you could only replace 2 speakers in theory. Not positive on this.
In the end, any speaker replacements somewhat requires an amp to be installed.
