Whats the widest tire you can put on a 17x8 rim without any rubbing issues?

A 35mm offset 8" wheel on the A4 has minimal rubbing issues with a 225 tire unless your suspension is lowered 2" or more or the springs are soft. 235 width can be fit too but it is usually followed by a need to roll the front fender lip back and modify the wheel well liner.
The fact of the matter is I can make a 205 tire rub on a 7.5" 45mm offset wheel on the front if I try, so "rubbing problems" depends on how you define "problems".

but only over big road imperfections, when the car is full of passengers over slightly smaller road imperfections or when cornering hard....autocross hard, not street hard. The fix will be raising my slammed car adn going with stffer sways front and rear...I have stock no sport sways right now...planning to go OEM sport or possibly bigger up front and 19mm in the rear.
