Default What's your normal operating temp on Castrol Syntec 5w40...

Well, I just changed my oil today, went from Mobil 1 0w40 to the Castrol Syntec - took me a full 6 qts to fill 'er up to just about the middle of the oil level indicator on the dipstick. Anyway, my operating temp dropped from ~220-225 to ~200 @ consistent 70mph. Is this normal? 2.8 30v btw. Maybe due to the drop in ambient air temp (~40deg @ time of drive)?
-Cheers

Default Mine never gets above 180 F even after all the work I've done

Granted I can drive that temp up if I drive the car hard, but normal ho-hum is 175-180 F.

Default Hmmm...so this is normal. I guess I'm just being paranoid....

Paranoia is a trait I've come to know well after owning this car and reading the threads in this forum.

M1 0w40 - 215ish for daily driving. Can easily get up to 225* on a longer drive.

Default It's a 2.8. It usually take a little over 6qts. In response to his question

I would guess it's the ambient temp. I've never seen a noticeable difference in temp when I switch from one oil weight to another.

Default My oil temp gauge in the GTI hovers right around 200 degrees F when cruising

And I'm using Castrol Syntec 5W-40. Of course, this gets thrown out the window when I start beating on it at the track, usually shoots up to 250.
