Default What's your opinion of installing a "used" engine?

Recap: Mom's car was flooded. Hydrolocked.
2002 A4 1.8TQTip 32k miles

Dealership put quote at $9700 for factory NEW motor.

Insurance co. looked at the car today. The adjustor offered a "used" engine which he supposedly located. He said that he cannot pay for a "new" engine because it would be considered "betterment" of the car.
I told my mom not to accept a used engine because it would not be covered under the car's remaining warranty. Only a factory new (and maybe a factory remanufactured) engine would be acceptable.

We'll see what happens. Any advice?

Default I would at least fight for an engine from Audi. The warranty concern is valid.

Who would be installing said engine anyway? If warranty is a concern, ONLY let your dealer install it.

Default rediculous....you could have a "built" engine installed for that much

I wouldn't have a dealer install the engine. I would use a good independent shop. Your insurance $$$ will go a long way. I paid $1500 to have my engine replaced.

Default My local mechanic told me that a factory reman engine costs

$5700 + 13 hours to install it. (Or did he say 19 hours? I don't remember.)

The new engine, according to the dealership is $6900 plus installation.

Default I had my done by an independent

he used to be an Audi mechanic. I have really lost faith in Audi. Their warranty means 0 to me. Even if there are some good techs, I trust my guy.
