When do you guys change timing belt? Is it a belt or chain on A4s?

Can someone elaborate on this or verify? I am at 52,000 miles on my 98.5. I would hate to dish out that kind of cash right now .

is longer than 60K, but since there have been a large number of premature failures (right around the 60K mark) common wisdom is to change it around 60K as insurance.
Ask BUGBBQ about his broken timing belt experience. Not pretty.
I'm faced with the same situation on my '99. At 53K and I found a local Audi/VW mechanic who's willing to do it for 3 hours of labor at $48/hour + parts which is around $150 to $200.
You can have it done a lot cheaper than the $1000 to $1200 the dealer wants.

In the 2.8's the water pump usually gets the timing belt. Interval for my 98.5 is 90,000 dealer suggested I do it now at 57,000.
I declined, I have an aftermarket warranty. If it pops before 90,000, it's their bill, not mine.

May want to change it sooner rather than later. Mine broke yesterday with 68K. A4 1.8T is an 'interference' engine. That means the parts go 'crunch' inside the head if the belt goes- Big $$$ to repair if there's damage to valves, etc.
