when the TB tensioner is failing and the car sounds like a "diesel" is it intermittent or chronic?

just wondering, i think i have a weird problem with a noisey lifter
usually when i start the car and first pull away i'll get a clicking from the top end for about 5 or so seconds, now the last couple days once in a while when i start the car instead of the normal routine, it will click when i start the car, bu the when i pull away, it's gone. could it just be a sticky lifter. i remember with my m3, after it sat for a few months the top end was noisey until i drove it around a bit.

Ive got the same lifter noise. The heavier oil seemed to help but now its coming back
It really sounds low budget. 5 seconds at start up for me too. But also when I let it idle for a couple of minutes it starts clicking. It makes me sad

When the TB tensioner fails, all you'll hear is silence.
It's rare that you'll hear a rattle, and if you do, odds are silence will follow before you can react.
Odds are you have another problem.
There is a chain tensioner on the back of the engine that will create a rattle on start up. That is usually a sign that it's on it's way out...but you probably have time to get to it.
