I've never used the free roadside assistance but have a few questions about it. If you require help, are you supposed to "tip" the driver who arrives and gets you going again? And if so to what degree? Also, if you use it because you ran out of gas do you pay for the gas they bring to get you going?

If you use AAA Plus they don't charge for the gas.
But if you use regular AAA, they do.
I keep AAA Plus even though I also have roadside assistance from Audi.

Yes and yes
Yes, you pay for the gas (probably some made-up inflated price). And yes, if the person provides a service, you should give him/her $5 or $10. Why not, they probably saved yer ***.
Here's my AAA story: I had a Miata and it had a flat, so naturally one of the McGard wheel locks seized up. I just couldn't get that little (*K$% off, so I called the auto club to come to my garage because I figured this happened all the time and they would have some kludge. The guy shows up (his overalls said he was a training supervisor), looks at the wheel for 10 seconds and says there's nothing he can do. He starts to slowly walk away, then swings around and comes back and says, "What?" I hadn't said anything! As he slowly started to walk away again, my wife nudged me and said he was waiting for a tip. By the time I found the money in my pocket, he was gone. Which is just as well, since he didn't do ****!
