It causes sludge build up i think b/c the oil doesn't circulate at warm temps. I'm not sure why it is that's just what i assumed.
Would anybody like to correct me please.

Short trips in and of themselves aren't bad, but a pattern of short trips isn't good. I commute 8 miles (10 minutes) to work. A short trip. If possible, I start the car 10 minutes before leaving in the morning (also not a great idea, but I figure it is the lesser of two evils). On the way home, I try to combine the trip with any errands I need to do to run the car as long as possible.

Oil temps less than 180 deg F. Why? Cold oil collects condensed acids and water, byproducts of combustion that normally "boil off." Idling cold does not help matters either unless the oil eventually comes up to temperature. Many short trips in a row are worse than the occasional quicky. If you change oil regularly the additive package (TBN = total base number) neutralizes the acids. Once the TBN is expended, your internal metal engine parts start to take over the duties and that's when bad things happen.
