have you tried running the car without it?
If it runs like crap, turn it off, go to Audi/VW Dealer, pick up a new one.
Looks like it can't cost more than $7 or $8 according to vwparts.com - good luck.

it's a "thrustring" - i don't know if that's "thrust-ring" or "thru-string"
either way it looks like some sort of sensor for vacuum or boost, would have to be my WAG, but some of the vets could venture a better guess.
Where's yippers or modifieda4, they are way more handy with an ETKA than I am.
