Whistling sound while cruising

Whistling sound while cruising
I get this whistling sound in my A4 when I am cruising down the highway. It has no relation to cold weather, accellerating, or engine starts. It happens when I stop accellerating and just cruise, or if I take my foot off the gas completely. I only hear it with the windows or the sunroof open. I would think it was the wind if it didn't seem connected to the throttle as I described. Can this be fixed? Is it a mechanical problem or just a nuisance?

It's a 2001 1.8TQ. When I accellerate I can clearly hear the turbo's whine--love it, but that's not the sound I am talking about. I guess this other noise could be the turbo if the turbo makes a noise as it spins down or something. I've never had a turbo engine before, so I don't know. But the noise definitely happens when I take my foot OFF the throttle. Also, it seems to be coming from the rear of the car.

The turbo whistle that I get when cruising on the interstate or at high speed is completely different from the whine of the turbo under acceleration. It's just a high pitched whistle, but if yours is coming from the rear of the car...I have no clue!

I have a 98 1.8t and for the life of me could not figure out what the sound was. I could only hear it with the windows open, performance was fine. I took the car to 4 different dealers. The second dealer told me they though it was a turbo problem but they seemed to scared to jump in and fix it. Finally the 4th dealer found the problem. I'm not a mechanic so i couldn 't tell you exaclty what was wrong, but apparently a piece within the turbo was about to go. They replaced the entire thing and 50k miles later i haven 't heard a thing. But now I'm starting to get a serious whining noise !
