Have you ever changed the fluid? My dealer said that it was lifetime fluid. I have a 99 w/ 51k miles. I'm thinking I should change it...

Default I don't doubt their knowledge it's just that I want my transmission to last a while and...

I've heard that it should be changed every 30k miles. I'm willing to pay them the $150 to change it but they were discouraging me to get it done.

Default I say its best to leave well enough alone, if it ain't broke, don't fix it

a little PM is always a good thing, but i don't know what involved in changing the fluid, i'd rather no having them sticking their hands where they don't have to.

Default Changing the tranny fluid is not likely something that you will be able do do unless you have a...

lift or a monkey pit. The car has to be perfectly level, and you need special tools to do the job. Acquiring the tools would not be terribly difficult.. Do you have a Bentley manual?

Ask again at the dealer. Maybe they will change it if you persist.

Default Who's lifetime, yours or the cars?

If it's yours be careful that someone doesn't try to shoot you if your tranny goes bad ;-)

Default 30k? jesus man, this is NOT an pontiac.

Stop reading about service intervals that are common for american made cars. German cars, and even many american cars are VERY different in terms of service interval.

If anythng, it would get done at 50k miles, but if your mechanics say don't do it, then don't do it. Because if you change it against their recomendation, your going to void any warranty work on the tranny that you may have remaining.

Default Actually I heard that here on AW from a couple of people...

I was wondering because the my manual says it's a lifetime fluid. Does that mean that I never change it? I heard that in Germany they put very few miles on average on their cars and lifetime means 60k-70k miles.

My manual also says to change the oil every 10k miles but I get it done every 3k-5k. I don't see how changing it can hurt anything. It's just regular maintenance.
