Who here thinks Audi is fibbing about the 1.8T's output? I think its 10hp higher. Comments?

Default Not all engines are created equal. I think I read on Hoppen's site that...

a stock 1.8T output varies between 145 (not sure) and 159 hp.

At sea level in Houston my gtech measurements came in around 140 at the wheels, so that's about high 150s at the crank. Gtech is not really accurate in absolute terms though, I use it for measuring BEFORE/AFTER differences between mods.

Default Maybe I have a "strong" one....

...the reason I ask is that I saw the post below regarding the 150hp Accord feeling slower than the 1.8T and that kinda piqued my interest. The 1.8T is just suspiciously quick given that the quattro is about 3100-3200lbs and has only 150 hp. Audi wouldn't be the first to lie about output - Nissan rates the Skyline GT-R at 276hp and its reputed to be more like 310hp or thereabouts.

I don't buy it.

w/out going really in depth - look at the torque curve comparison. HP is sometimes a misnomer

Default Don't Forget torque....

the torque peak on the 1.8T comes in very low, and stays linear into the upper rev range. Hondas engines historically have higher H.P. than torque, and both peak at high RPM-i.e. new Honda S2000-H.P. and torque peaks are above 8000rpm, this does not do much if you are a gear too high trying to accelerate.

Default I know what you mean, but ..

There is some variation in the engine output, and I'd be surprised if there were too many that were below the published number, but I think part of what you're feeling is the benefit of the 5-value head. This little Audi 1.8 has been incredibly well designed in that it generates a lot of torque right across the RPM range. This makes it feel stronger than it otherwise might, whatever the HP rating may be. Remember also that HP is the result of driving a force (torque) through a distance (revolutions of the crank) . Therefore, cars that have higher redlines also report higher HP numbers, even though this may not make them much faster in daily driving where you run the engine in the mid-RPM ranges.

Default I also have felt that the 150 h.p. figure might be low, especially with a/c off .nt.,

Default Agree, more on hp/torque

It also depends on when they do the dyno work. My engine at 5-10k was still VERY tight and a bit sluggish, now at 30k is feels a lot stronger.
