Some people wonder why the 1.8T is so de-tuned to give only 150 hp, when it can give so much more. I think the reason is because when it came out, Audi was offering at the time the 24 valves V6 and most automobile critics were saying that the 1.8T was so good that it was not worth paying the extra money for the V6. If Audi would have made the 1.8T more potent, the sales of the V6 would have dropped even more. If this is true, it would also mean that it can be chipped safely in order to give it the power it should have had in the first place. This is my $0.02 worth!
Pierre
A4 98.5 Silver 1.8TQ stick, not chipped yet
....reading a post about some sort of insurance "barrier" in Europe for cars over 193 hp (I think it was on bimmer.org, or maybe here). The insurance apparently would increase dramatically at this point....that's why the E46 3 series 2.8 engine was improved to "only" 193 hp when it probably is easily capable of 210 or so. The same would probably go for the 2.8 30V Audi engine.....
This is all recall from my fuzzy memory of course....I could be just dreaming...
-Ash
98.5 Silver 1.8TQMS
PS: Just FYI...The 1.8 turbo engine is not a "V4", it's a straight 4....

And have a North American car that's MORE powerful than it's European conterpart??!?! They'll NEVER go for that! (i.e. M3, Aussie 1.8TQ A4, S4, everything in N/A is de-tuned!)
Just kidding of course...that is an option though...no idea as to why it isn't happening. Are you listening Audi?!?!?!
-Ash
98.5 Silver 1.8TQMS

I live in Montreal, and I'm reluctant to purchase A4 products from the states because of the additional fees incurred such as customs brokerage, local tax, exchange rate etc. A good deal in the US becomes a so-so deal for a Canadian.
Gus
98.5 30v

There is a Wett outlet in Canada now (in Alberta I think). Check their web page. You can also take your ECU down to the US, make the changes there (if going for vacation) and bring it back with you, saving on duty and brokerage fees.
0.02c
