Why did my car go into limp mode on the dark highway?

I was driving my 2000 1.8 A4 to drop it off for new shocks, springs, and rear brakes. (For reference, this was Rt. 128 in eastern MA.)
The car has not been driven in almost a week. It was 8 degrees out, and I was about 20 minutes into my trip. All of a sudden, the car felt like it was anemic. You know that horrible feeling that the power is gone and something bad is happening.
The car slowed way down, then started bucking, and the warning light went on. I'll assume that was "limp mode".
I made it to the edge of the road, and was unable to drive more than a few feet. The car did not stall, but the revs were irregular and jumpy around the 1K mark.
I restarted the car, and it was fine. It scared the bajeebers out of me (I didn't want to freeze to death waiting for a tow), and now I don't feel I can trust the car.
Was this just some glitch in the system? Any suggestions?

Sorry for the painfully obvious remark. But whatever the issue is...shouldn't be ignored, because it will return.
First thing I would do is scan the codes from the ECU. What you're describing could be any number of things...we need something more concrete to zero in on the issue.

I was wondering if I could have somehow missed some prior indication of trouble, but I can't think of anything.
