In German it's called "Airbag"
Despite that being an English term, they've always called it "Airbag." And it pretty much decribes what it is, doesn't it? ;-)
And a mobile phone is a "Handy".

Maybe the original inventor/maker trademarked and registered the name "AIRBAGTM®"?
Then other makers would have had to find a new name for their own airbags. Just a theory. One I'm hardly willing to further investigate. ;-)

srs are not just airbags....
auto seat belts also fall under this term. srs is aa legal term thought up by our polls. american car companies use srs as to not confuse our polititions.
