Why do they call it "Avant", shouldn't it be more like "Derriere"?

Why do they call it "Avant", shouldn't it be more like "Derriere"?

Default "Avant" translates as "front" or "forward," as in Avant Garde
Whereas "Derriere" would translate as "rear" or "***," as in "some derriere made the original post insulting Avants."
