Why does VAG use "multi-spline bolts instead of allens???
Does anybody know if there is a real reason for this, or are the engineers just being cute/*******s.
I just got back from the industrial bolt supply shop with a bag of stuff to finish up the clutch install. I decided get twelve 8X50 allen bolts to replace the multi splines in the front drive axles. I am really afraid of stripping the old ones out when get sone torque on them.
Don't worry about strength, I picked 12.9's.

more splines = harder to strip. I'm betting if you measured the surface area of the actual surface
the tool fits into, you would have much more surface area than your standard allen key. More area can handle more power, given the same size. Splines (especially high number of teeth)are superior so far as thier ability to handle power. It's the reason you see 5 inch spline shafts powering tail rotor sections on helos (the one I'm refering to had 15000 shaft hp at peak power)
Believe it or not the local autozone etc has the little spline tool for the half shafts.

Which are never stocked in retail stores...
I found a cheapo set at NAPA, already ruined the splines on the one that I used. The Snap On dude said that he did not stock it and it would be a few days before he got it in.
