Default It has nothing to do with speed, but rather...
it has something to do with not turning the wheel :-P

Could be the steering pump going bad, or low fluids. Hopefully it's just low fluids.

i damn near almost have to stop and put it in reverse and then go after i start turning

You should check you tire PSI to fat chick ratio... you might be running a bit lean...

Default the 2.8 is harder to turn than the 1.8T due to the added weight..
is this something that's developed recently?

My wheel feels HEAVY compared to my dad's 1.8T non-sport. Driving his car is like steering a caddy. If I get into my car right after driving his, mine feels almost impossible to turn.
